Affirming Sex Therapy Primer
As a sex therapist, I'm always on the lookout for introductory resources that explore embodiment, sexuality, and emotional connection. Casey Tanner’s Feel It All: How to Unlock the Power of Your Emotions for a Healthier, Happier Relationship to Sex is an excellent option. Not only does it offer an empathetic and inclusive approach to sexuality (addressing sexism, ageism and ableism), but it couches approach within the generational and societal trauma many of us have experienced—purity culture, sexual abuse, abstinence-only sex education.
Tanner offers exercises, reflections, and guided prompts designed to help readers explore their emotional and sexual selves. These exercises are not about achieving a specific sexual outcome (such as better orgasms or increased libido) but rather about helping readers understand their inner worlds and how those worlds show up in their sexual experiences. The emphasis on emotional awareness is especially important in a culture that often pushes us toward performance-oriented goals in sex.
It’s rare that I recommend books to anyone without reservation, but I would for this book. Because of her inclusivity and candor, it is a great read for anyone who wants to explore their sexuality and improve their relationships.
